الأسماء الحسنى
Asmā' al-Ḥusnā — the most beautiful names of Allah. Each name is a window onto His mercy, His majesty and His wisdom, and a means of drawing nearer to Him.
Among the gifts Allah has given us is the knowledge of His own names. In the Qur'an He says, "To Allah belong the most beautiful names, so call upon Him by them." These are the Asmā' al-Ḥusnā — the beautiful names — and they describe Him as He has described Himself: the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving, the Source of Peace, the All-Wise.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that Allah has ninety-nine names, and that whoever embraces them — learning them, reflecting on their meanings, and living by them — has a share in great reward. To "embrace" the names is more than memorising a list; it is to know Allah more truly, to call upon Him by the name that fits your need, and to let each name shape your heart and your conduct.
When you are afraid, you turn to the One who is As-Salām, the Source of Peace. When you have sinned, you call on Al-Ghafūr, the Most Forgiving. When you cannot see the wisdom in what befalls you, you trust Al-Ḥakīm, the All-Wise. In this way the names are not abstract ideas but a living relationship with your Creator.
Below is a small selection of well-known names with their meanings. They are a beginning, not the whole — an invitation to learn the rest and to make du'ā by them.

These twelve are only a glimpse of the ninety-nine. The names cover His mercy and His might, His knowledge and His justice, His generosity and His patience — and together they teach us how to think of Allah and how to turn to Him.
A simple way to benefit is to learn a few names at a time, understand what each one means, and then call upon Allah by them in your du'ā — choosing the name that suits your need. Reflecting on a single name slowly, until it settles in the heart, is worth more than reciting the whole list in haste. May Allah make us among those who know His names, love Him through them, and are gathered among His righteous servants.
